In an effort to reduce the number of structures at risk for flood damage in the event of a 100-year flood, the Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are in a cooperative effort to widen 21 miles of Brays Bayou across Houston, TX. Project Brays includes 13 separate channel modification projects, 32 bridge modification projects, and the construction of four stormwater detention basins with a combined capacity of 3.5 billion gallons.
The Ardmore Street Bridge, in south central Harris County, is one such structure that is being replaced with a new higher, longer, and wider bridge that will increase the flow of stormwater beneath it and significantly reduce the chance of flooding in surrounding neighborhoods. The new bridge will also improve traffic with the inclusion of a new turn lane and expanded sidewalks.
